First time back to sanibel in over 20 years we came back and loved it again My wife and i had our 5th anniversary dinner at the mad hatter. Sad to say the Mad Hatter is off our list for the future. The other meals were ok (the woman said the steak was better the night before at a different restaurant) but we honestly couldn’t enjoy ourselves because it was so loud in there. The bouillabaisse has always been my favorite dish and it was really bland and lacking flavor. I know times are tough and that it is difficult to keep up with the demand but this was ridiculous. It used to be such a fine dining experience and our meals were mediocre, chairs were uncomfortable and we finally decided to go elsewhere for dessert just to get away from the noise.

There were a number of groups of 5 or 6 seated along the windows and it was so loud that we couldn’t hear what each other was saying AT ALL! We are not old or hard of hearing and we know this is a small building with an intimate type of setting, but there is ZERO ambience here anymore. Unfortunately the noise level was so loud that the other couple complained to us by making a few jokes but we were embarrassed that we took them there at all. We were very excited to bring another couple here for dinner and they wanted to treat us for a special night out to thank us for hosting them. last night after being very excited to visit we were so disappointed.

We have enjoyed the Mad Hatter for special dinners out for years but. I am always the first one to compliment an establishment when we are pleased with our experience but unfortunately I am not able to write that type of a review this time. For visitors, be sure to allow sufficient time to travel to this restaurant near the West end of Sanibel (approx 25 minutes from Middle Gulf Drive. Important to make a reservation in high season. Dinners at Mad Hatter are expensive but reasonably priced, because this is a place for special occasions, probably one of the best restaurants in the region. Could not resist the crepe dessert with berries, bananas, and ice cream. Bouillabaisse was spot on (best I have had) and rack of lamb (from Australia) was excellent (albeit out of place for Sanibel). We had two salads (the "house" with pears and candied walnuts and the watermelon salad with feta and cayenne to give it a slight kick. We experienced excellent and attentive service and appreciated a friendly/fun. The food is outstanding with top shelf ingredients and just enough innovation to make things interesting. There are many restaurants in Sanibel/Captiva, but this place is on a different level.
